Burning Down the House

Yes, day 2, Summer Cold, house bound.     It's getting scary...

I.   Hate.   Summer.   Colds.

Here is a new Book Meme, so I don't kill someone in my house!

(waving at Paul!)

Hardback, trade paperback or mass market paperback?
I couldn't care less if it was written on toilet paper.  I will read it!

Barnes & Noble or Borders?
Borders.  I have a specific, smaller Borders, that I love.  It has no cafe, but that keeps out the rabble.  Just serious book people go there... all the employees know me and the kids.  :-)

Bookmark or dog-ear?
Bookmark or memorize the page #!  DOG EAR????  ARE YOU KIDDING ME???  <<<shaking head and muttering...>>>
Ahem... Dog ears damage pages.  Often permanently.  Very bad.

Amazon or brick and mortar?
Usually brick and mortar, but I do Amazon occasionally.

Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?
Grouped by author, alphabetically, in order of publication.  Sorted by genre.

Keep, throw away, or sell?
Keep and give away.

Keep dust jacket or toss it?
Keep, do people actually throw them out?

Read with dust jacket or remove it?
I read with it.  I remove it for Hammer.  He can be rough on them.

Short story or novel?
Novel.  I am not really a short story or essay person.  I get that here online.

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Harry rocks.  I have never read any Lemony or saw the movie.  It seems too sad to me.
Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
Usually I stop when the book is done, but if I am ridiculously tired, or just started the book, then at a chapter break.

"It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"?
Dark and stormy, that ends with a 'Once upon a time' ending. :-D

Buy or borrow?
Buy.

New or used?
New, but I will buy used every now and then on Amazon.

Buying choice: book reviews, recommendations, or browse?
All of the above!

Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Either, but if there is a sort of cliffhanger, another book had better be coming!

Morning reading, afternoon reading, or night reading?
Yes, all of the above.

Stand-alone or series?
Both. I enjoy series, but I like to start at the beginning, and sometimes you can't...  I remember with Michael Connelly, I read one of his Harry Bosch, Detective series books - loved it, then went back the next day and bought all of the books from the beginning of the series!  I read them all straight through, and repeated the one I read first.  I have been reading him ever since, too.

Favorite series?
For fun, the Stephanie Plum by Janet Evanovich.  For a good detective story, I love Harry Bosch by Michael Connelly, as I mentioned above.  Also, Alex Cross, is a great detective, but with the psychological edge, by James Patterson.  Harry Potter for magic and heroism, by JK Rowling.  Harry Dresden for more humor, magic and detective story in the round, by Jim Butcher.   For forensic stories, I like Kay Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell, and Temperance Brennan by Kathy Reichs.

Scarily enough, I could list more series that I read and follow, without fail.

Favorite children's book?
The top three are 'Pat the Bunny', 'Goodnight Moon', and 'Green Eggs and Ham'.

Favorite YA book?
Judy Blume and Anthony Horowitz.  Fabulous.

Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?

Favorite books read last year?
Too many to list all, but a favorite that most haven't read would be 'The Devil in the White City' by Erik Larson.

Jeff Shaara's WWII book, 'The Rising Tide', which is the first in a series of 3 on WWII was excellent.

Another great book this year was Steve Berry's 'The Alexandria Link'.

Favorite books of all time?
Wow, that is hard.  Probably, the Shaara books of the Civil War.  Phenomenal.   Nelson DeMille's 'Nightfall', would also be up there (another series that I love).  'Marley and Me' by John Grogan, was a great pet story and memoir.

What are you reading right now?
I just finished 'Pilate's Wife' by Antoinette May, very good.  I am almost finished with 'Hannibal Rising' by Thomas Harris, and I read 'All Together Dead' by Charlaine Harris (newest of the Sookie Stackhouse series) in the middle of them!

What are you reading next?
I want to get the newest James Rollins, it just came out called 'The Judas Strain'.  It is his third in the Sigma Force series.  I told you, I read a whole bunch of series!!!

Favorite book to recommend to an eleven-year-old?
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, they will be hooked on reading for life.  And, also for a girl, 'Are You there God, It's Me Margaret' by Judy Blume.

Favorite book to reread?
See above!  LOL

Do you ever smell books?
All the time!  I love the smell of books!!!!

Do you ever read Primary source documents?
Oh yes, especially when reading a historical fiction.  I find it very helpful.

Alright, I have kept my hands successfully off of my hubby's throat for a full hour and half while fiddling around with this meme and entry!  And, I almost don't want to choke him anymore... and the kids are going to bed.  Wooohooo!

be well,
Dawn

I hope you start to feel better soon!
I dog ear too.....I love Barnes and Noble. Sometimes I think I might be addicted! lol
I am reading Julie Kenner...I didn't use to like science fiction/fantasy but her series about a demon hunting soccer mom is really great. Kinda reminds me of how Buffy might be if she quit being a slayer and got married. Yes I love the Buffy series on TV as well :)

Take care,
Gretchen

GREAT GRAPHIC! GREAT entry! I read Hannibal Rising, too, and Red Dragon-both from Harris-right? I like when I borrow a book from a friend, and can smell THEIR house! LOL I like the Borders near me-it has a cafe', which I love, OK-i'm spoiled!
I only read at night-usually-when very ill I did read in day time; I'm into a newish
author, for me anyway-ever hear of Anne Proulx? She wrote Brokeback Mountain and Shipping News-both made into motion pictures; I'm kind of hooked on her right now, she writes so differently than most, and her knowledge on different subjects seems emence; so sorry you have a nasty summer cold! Be well..stop over by my journal, if you have a minute. ~Diane~ http://journals.aol.com/dizarra/StorysFromtheCityTalesFromtheSea/

I enjoyed this meme so much I almost wanted to do it.  I am always afraid of turning non readers off even more by talking too much about books.  I learned to keep quiet about books living in poor neighbors especially when a number of locals did not even speak English!  I don't know how many times I have been cussed for talking about books as I was growing up.  Utah children were encouraged to stick to church books.  Book readers tended to get other ideas and would cause trouble.  Gerry  http://journals.aol.com/gehi6/daughters-of-the-shadow-men/

OK, I'll bite -- where are the original questions (without your lovely answers) located? Interesting choices, m'dear.

Get your doc to prescribe Nasonex -- works wonders on summer head colds -- makes life almost bearable (but don't give up the hot toddy before bedtime).

loved this entry! of course, vince flynn came to mind ... have you read "consent to kill?"  it's his second to last, before "act of treason," and, i think, his best so far.  i couldn't put it down!  he has a new one coming out october 30th ... mitch rapp returns in "protect and defend"!  let me know if you read/enjoyed "consent" ... thoughts.  :)

Dawn,
I've just finished reading all 10 entries located front and center here in your journal. You sound like you are doing really well! (aside from the yucky summer cold)
I'm especially relieved about your husbands results.....a toe infection is better then other possibilities, so that was a good trade. Keep the coffee flowing, the smiles given and the kids late nights with Mom. It all sounds great to me! Ok, Ok, aside from the interuption during the Harry Potter movie......I feel your irritation there!
Anyway, I'm always reading, always checking up on you and I'm glad your doing well!
